Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), through its thermal subsidiary Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region VI, the Local Government Unit of the Municipality of Leon, and the Bucari Eco-Planters Association (BEPA), officially launched the Bucari Reforestation and Carbon Sink Project.
The project aims to plant over 340,000 seedlings across 225 hectares of land in Barangays Bucari, Cagay, and Danao, all located in the Municipality of Leon, Iloilo, over the next six years (2025-2030).
This initiative reflects a shared commitment to restoring the natural heritage of Bucari while supporting environmental sustainability and community development.
“We are pleased to partner with DENR, LGU-Leon, and BEPA in this vital effort to restore and preserve the natural beauty of Bucari. This project not only aligns with our commitment to environmental stewardship but also supports the economic development of the local community,” said Felino M. Bernardo, MGEN Thermal President and CEO. ”
BEPA will lead the implementation of the reforestation program, with DENR and LGU-Leon providing technical support and monitoring to ensure its long-term success.
The initiative aligns with PEDC’s Environmental and Social Performance Management Plan (EPRMP) and the Environment Compliance Certificate (ECC) conditions, as well as the broader One for Trees program under the One Meralco Sustainability Agenda.
With a total investment of PHP18.5 million, the Bucari Reforestation and Carbon Sink Project is set to have a meaningful impact on biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and the livelihoods of the surrounding communities.
“This reforestation effort is a crucial step toward a greener, more sustainable future, aligning with MGEN’s mission to Power a Better Future,” added Bernardo.
