BACOLOD CITY – A 37-year-old man with a reported mental disability died after being sideswiped by a sugarcane truck in Sitio Mambatang, Barangay Bantayan, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday, Jan. 12.
According to a police report, the victim, who was allegedly intoxicated, was sleeping on a cemented canal when the rear right wheel of the truck struck him.
The truck, driven by a 44-year-old resident of Barangay Tampalon, was transporting sugarcane to Sonedco in Barangay Camugao. The accident occurred around 2 p.m. at the intersection of Barangay Bantayan-Tabugon Road.
The driver immediately surrendered to a nearby Army detachment following the incident.
Police Capt. Sammy Gasataya, deputy chief of the Kabankalan City Police Station, said both parties had reached a settlement.
