Property giant Megaworld Corporation has fully transitioned all of its company-owned offices, hotels, malls, and residential properties to 100% renewable energy, marking a major milestone in its sustainability journey.
The shift covers 54 commercial properties listed under MREIT, Inc., Megaworld’s real estate investment trust, including 26 office towers, 15 lifestyle malls, and eight hotels located in premier developments such as Uptown Bonifacio, Eastwood City, McKinley Hill, Newport City, and Iloilo Business Park.
Several residential properties in Taguig, Parañaque, and Makati have also made the switch to clean energy sources.
“Reaching 100% renewable energy for all our properties is a significant leap forward in our sustainability journey,” said Jose Arnulfo Batac, Megaworld’s Head of Sustainability.
“This milestone underscores Megaworld’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, and we are fully committed to extending these efforts to all our developments as we work towards building townships of the future powered by fully sustainable energy sources,” he added.
The transformation was made possible through Megaworld’s participation in the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) program, which allows “Contestable Customers” — those consuming at least 500 kilowatts — to source electricity from licensed Retail Energy Suppliers (RES).
The company partnered with MPower, a subsidiary of Meralco, in March 2024 to initiate the shift and has since tapped ACEN and other renewable energy providers for its office and residential developments.
The move to clean energy aligns with the company’s broader environmental program, MEGreen, launched in 2023 to consolidate its sustainability initiatives under a single platform aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
While this milestone applies to contestable properties, Megaworld also plans to transition its non-contestable assets — including those under subsidiaries and joint ventures — to renewable energy by 2030.
The initiative positions Megaworld among the country’s leading developers prioritizing sustainability and carbon footprint reduction across real estate operations.
As climate change accelerates and energy reform gains momentum, the shift underscores the growing role of the private sector in advancing clean energy goals and supporting the Philippines’ transition to a more resilient, low-carbon economy.
