Lord Cedric Mascariñas aims to ride his biking edge to another title as he seeks back-to-back victories in the men’s division of the Sunrise Sprint, a sub-event of the Sun Life 5150 Bohol, set for Sunday, July 13, on Panglao Island.
Mascariñas ruled last year’s short-distance race with a dominant bike leg, capturing the overall title in the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run course held at the scenic Bellevue Resort, now considered one of the country’s premier triathlon hubs.
Also known as S2, the Sunrise Sprint is designed for aspiring triathletes, returning competitors rekindling their passion, and athletes seeking a multisport experience without long training hours.
Beyond accessibility, the S2 has grown into a competitive platform that nurtures future triathlon stars by offering Olympic-style race conditions and increasingly deep fields each year.
Mascariñas faces stiffer competition this time, led by fellow Cebuanos Michael Lalimos, last year’s third-placer, and IRONKIDS standout Carron Cañas.
Promising homegrown talents Cian Zamora, Elioun Austral, Josiah Delusa and John Christopher Barbas also aim to make their mark in the fast-rising S2 series.
In the women’s division, last year’s runner-up Venie Herbias returns eyeing the top podium finish in the absence of defending champion Alexis Belen.
She will be challenged by Cebu’s rising star Candace Socito; host city contender Fiona Lantaka; Bukidnon’s Gene Heart Quiambao, a former national duathlon champion and two-time Triathlete of the Year; and Nicole del Rosario of Cebu, who topped the S2 race at 5150 Dapitan in 2024.
Athletes from Austria, China, Hungary, Jamaica and the United States will also compete in age-group divisions, highlighting the event’s growing international appeal.
“We are seeing the S2 evolve from an introductory race into a proving ground for future national athletes,” said Princess Galura, president and managing director of organizer Sunrise Events Inc.
“It’s inspiring to witness first-timers gaining confidence, age-groupers discovering new goals, and young talents transitioning from grassroots events like IRONKIDS to higher-level multisport races.”
The S2 rolling start begins at 5:50 a.m. at the beachfront of the Bellevue Resort, with a 30-minute swim cutoff.
The bike leg must be completed within two hours of the last rolling start, while the total race must be finished within three hours.
The mandatory race briefing for both 5150 and Sunrise Sprint participants is scheduled for Saturday, following the media conference at 11 a.m.
