Man stabs cousin over card game at wake

ILOILO CITY — A man stabbed his cousin after they fought over a card game of Lucky 9 during their grandmother’s wake early Monday, Aug. 3, in Lambunao, Iloilo.

Police identified the suspect only as “Roger,” 56, a farmer from Barangay Bansag, Lambunao.

Lt. Vincent Garcia, Lambunao police chief, said Roger voluntarily surrendered after the knife attack injured his 42-year-old cousin, Welmer.

Garcia said Roger was released after the legally prescribed detention period expired because Welmer said he would no longer file a complaint.

The two later reached a settlement after Roger agreed to pay Welmer’s hospital expenses.

Reports said the cousins were playing Lucky 9 at the wake when a misunderstanding arose.

Both men were under the influence of alcohol at the time.

During the argument, Welmer allegedly punched Roger.

Roger then retaliated by stabbing Welmer once in the left side of the chest.

Welmer was taken to Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial Hospital in Lambunao for treatment.
