A jobless man was shot dead inside his home late on March 4 in Calinog, Iloilo.
The victim, identified only as “Ronaldo,” was a resident of Barangay Supanga, a hinterland village about 25 kilometers from Calinog town.
Police said he was believed to be preparing to sleep when the suspect or suspects entered his house.
According to his brother, Dominador, it was around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when he heard a gunshot coming from his brother’s house.
He immediately went to Ronaldo’s house and discovered his body.
Maj. Myles Dieron, Calinog police chief, said the victim was found on the kitchen floor, a few steps from his bed.
Dieron said there may have been two suspects who entered through a window and shot the victim.
Ronaldo sustained a gunshot wound to the back.
Police believe he died instantly, and relatives did not bring him to a hospital.
Police were informed about the incident at around 6:30 a.m. the next day.
Recovered from the scene were two rounds of ammunition and a fired bullet from a .45-caliber pistol, as well as a handgun spring, Dieron said.
Dieron said police have yet to identify a person of interest.
He said the victim was alone inside the house when the shooting happened.
While there are no identified suspects, Dieron said old grudges may have triggered the incident.
There were reports that Ronaldo was known to waylay riders with a weapon when he was drunk, and that several had been threatened, Dieron said.
“That’s why it’s possible that the suspect/s could be residents in the area or nearby villages,” Dieron said.
The investigation is ongoing as police gather more evidence and testimony.
