Man killed, wife hurt in Bacolod road crash

BACOLOD CITY — A man was killed and his wife was seriously injured after a pickup truck driven by a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel collided with their tricycle and later hit a passenger jeepney along Araneta Street in Barangay Sum-ag shortly after midnight Friday.
Police identified the fatality as Rogello, a resident of Barangay Sum-ag.
His wife, Liberty, was seriously injured and remained in critical condition, according to Maj. Elmer Bonilla, chief of the Traffic Enforcement Unit.
Bonilla said the couple was on their way to fetch their child, who works at a fast-food restaurant, when the collision occurred at about 12:45 a.m.
The 33-year-old PCG personnel, a resident of Siquijor, was coming from duty in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, when he allegedly failed to notice the tricycle he was following on a rainy night.
Bonilla said the Coast Guard personnel appeared intoxicated and was reportedly speeding before the crash.
The 30-year-old jeepney driver, a resident of Barangay Singcang-Airport, Bacolod City, was unharmed.
Bonilla said the PCG personnel is under the custody of Police Station 9.
Police are awaiting the injured victim’s decision on whether to pursue charges against the driver.
