A 26-year-old man was wounded in a shooting incident while celebrating his live-in partner’s birthday on Saturday in Igbaras, Iloilo.
The victim was identified as Michael Elario, a resident of the hinterland village of Igcabugao.
Police Staff Sergeant Carnel Bolivar, Igbaras police investigator, said Elario was hit on the chest in the shooting episode around 10:40 p.m.
He was taken to Tubungan Health Center and later brought to Rep Pedro Trono Memorial Hospital in Guimbal town.
Elario was subsequently transferred to Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City where he underwent surgery.
A police report indicated that the victim’s older brother was the suspect of the incident.
Bolivar said the report is based on the statement of Elario’s live-in partner, 21-year-old Maricel Blando, to the hospital guard.
“But when we talked to her the following morning (WVMC) at the hospital, she claimed to have not identified the suspect,” Bolivar said.
Blando claimed she heard a gunshot and later saw Elario wounded.
Bolivar said they have yet to investigate the crime scene.
Igcabugao is a far-flung village and known for the presence of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Bolivar said they are not discounting the possibility that somebody influenced Blando to change her statement.
