Mamuyac’s heroics lead Rain or Shine past TNT

Gian Mamuyac hit a crucial three-pointer to lead Rain or Shine to a 110-109 victory over the TNT Tropang GIGA in Game 3 of their PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal series on Wednesday, May 15, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Mamuyac’s triple with 39 seconds remaining gave the Elasto Painters a 106-100 lead, enough to withstand TNT’s late rally.

The former Ateneo guard finished with 25 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Jhonard Clarito added 17 points and nine boards.

Rain or Shine won the best-of-three series, 2-1, advancing to the semifinals where they will face top-seeded San Miguel Beer in a best-of-seven series.

The Elasto Painters led by as much as 20 points, but Calvin Oftana’s big fourth quarter helped the Tropang GIGA close the gap.

Despite Mamuyac’s clutch shot, TNT’s Kelly Williams hit a three-pointer to make it 107-103 with under 30 seconds left.

A free throw by Clarito left the door open for TNT, and Williams nailed another triple to bring it to 108-106 with under five seconds remaining.

Gabe Norwood’s two free throws sealed the game for Rain or Shine, rendering Williams’ buzzer-beating triple insufficient for a comeback.

Williams finished with 32 points and 14 rebounds, while Oftana had 27 points, nine boards, and four assists. Roger Pogoy scored 22 points before being stretchered off late in the game.

Mamuyac’s performance was praised by his teammates and coaches alike. “Gian showed tremendous poise and confidence in taking that shot,” said Rain or Shine head coach Chris Gavina. “It was a total team effort, but his shot was the dagger.”

Mamuyac, who has been a key player for Rain or Shine this season, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute.

“I just wanted to help my team win. We all played our hearts out and I’m glad I was able to hit that shot,” he said.

Rain or Shine’s victory sets up a highly anticipated semifinal clash with San Miguel Beer, which finished the regular season with the best record. The series is expected to be a tough challenge for the Elasto Painters, who are looking to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
