Four major companies have signed an agreement to explore the Philippines’ first Intelligent City initiative, with the Makati central business district identified as the pilot area for a project that aims to use data, artificial intelligence, connectivity and digital platforms to improve urban life.
Ayala Corp., Globe Telecom, Mitsubishi Corp. and KDDI Corp. formalized the memorandum of understanding in Tokyo, Japan, on May 28, 2026, during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s state visit to Japan.
The Philippine News Agency reported that the agreement seeks to study Intelligent City initiatives in Makati City, while Ayala said the deal is part of broader Philippine-Japan partnerships covering intelligent city solutions and digital economy initiatives.
The project will use Globe’s network and digital services to support an ecosystem covering mobility, retail, energy and connectivity.
It will also involve the development of intelligent city platforms that integrate data and use AI solutions.
“Ayala Corp. has always believed in building communities that uplift lives. Through this initiative, we are reimagining Makati CBS as a hub of innovation, where technology and human connection converge to create a city that truly serves its people,” said President and CEO Cezar Consing.
The partnership will also use technologies such as the Internet of Things, incorporating artificial intelligence into practical, everyday applications.
Together, the companies said these focus areas will help build more intelligent, sustainable and resilient urban communities.
Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz said the project underscores the role of telecommunications infrastructure in digital inclusion and nation-building.
“Connectivity has become the lifeblood of progress, the Fifth Utility that empowers nations to grow and thrive. Globe is excited to showcase its consistent and reliable network to transform our cities, ensuring that every Filipino has access to the tools, opportunities, and digital experiences they need to keep moving forward in an increasingly connected world.”
The initiative places Makati’s business district at the center of efforts to modernize Philippine urban development through advanced connectivity, AI and sustainable technologies.
Makati has long been one of the country’s major business centers, with Ayala’s development of the area after World War II helping transform it into a dense commercial and financial district.
Ayala, Globe, Mitsubishi and KDDI said the Intelligent City project could serve as a model for future developments nationwide.
The companies said the initiative is expected to create an environment where businesses can innovate, opportunities become more inclusive, and economic resilience and competitiveness are strengthened for Filipino enterprises and entrepreneurs in the digital age.
They also said the partnership could allow millions of Filipinos to experience safer, more intelligent and more connected communities.
Globe Telecom Inc., listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange under the symbol GLO, describes itself as a leading Philippine digital platform with interests in telecommunications, fintech, venture building, shared services and digital marketing.
The company offers mobile, broadband, data and managed services for consumers and businesses.
Globe is a participant in the United Nations Global Compact and said it is the first publicly listed Philippine firm with approved near- and long-term science-based targets under the Science Based Targets initiative.
The company was also named one of TIME and Statista’s Most Sustainable Companies in 2025.
Globe said its inclusion in the Fortune Southeast Asia 500 in 2024 and 2025 affirmed its growth and leadership.
Its principals are Ayala Corp. and Singtel.
