Magnolia puts the clamps on GSM, returns to PBA win column

The Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots banked on their rejuvenated defense to contain Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 88-73, in the ongoing PBA Governors’ Cup at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Aug. 2, 2026.

Fresh off a heartbreaking one-point loss to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Magnolia regained its groove against the Gin Kings and put on a defensive masterclass, limiting the Tim Cone-led squad to 73 points, its lowest offensive output in the import-laced conference.

Across four grueling quarters, the Chicken Timplados held Ginebra to 38.6% shooting from the field, including a dismal 28% from 3-point range.

Heading into the highly anticipated Manila Clasico showdown, Magnolia head coach LA Tenorio had emphasized the need to slow Ginebra’s triangle offense, a task his team accomplished.

The complexion of the game changed when Magnolia turned a one-point cushion into a 10-point lead in the second quarter, powered by a series of defensive stops that limited the Gin Kings to 19 points in the first half.

From there, Magnolia never looked back, suffocating Ginebra with another defensive showing that extended its lead to as many as 19 points.

The Gin Kings endured a cold stretch in the crucial final quarter, failing to cut the deficit to single digits before the final buzzer.

A late 3-point barrage revived Ginebra’s hopes of a miraculous comeback, but import KJ Buffen and athletic power forward Zavier Lucero combined to protect Magnolia’s double-digit lead.

Lucero redeemed himself against the Gin Kings and led the squad with a dominant double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite limited playing time, Buffen posted another stellar stat line with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while veteran center Ian Sangalang added 16 points.

Stephen Holt tried to help Ginebra inch closer in every quarter, but his 17-point output was not enough to slow the surging Chicken Timplados.

Magnolia will try to build on the win on Aug. 7, 2026, in the main game of a scheduled doubleheader, while Ginebra will seek a bounce-back victory against the Blackwater Bossing on Aug. 9, 2026.
