Former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said he is contemplating filing libel charges against Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon but is seeking divine guidance before making a final decision.
“It is actually ready, but I am praying because I want to follow the footsteps of God, and that is to forgive,” Mabilog said during a press conference on Monday, January 27.
He acknowledged feeling hurt by Ganzon’s actions in the past, which he said persist to this day.
“I am praying for Him to guide me on what is the best thing to do,” he added.
Mabilog mentioned that he also plans to file charges against several other individuals, though he declined to reveal their identities or the nature of the cases.
When asked about Ganzon’s statement that he could not recall making any libelous remarks, Mabilog speculated that the vice mayor might be suffering from a progressive neurodegenerative condition.
“Maybe he already has Alzheimer’s disease,” he remarked briefly.
Ganzon, in response, denied recollecting any defamatory or libelous statements against Mabilog. However, he emphasized his respect for Mabilog’s right to file a case if he feels aggrieved.
Mabilog first announced his intention to file libel charges against Ganzon on October 8, 2024.
Atty. Jeric Jucaban, Mabilog’s legal counsel, previously confirmed to the Daily Guardian that the libel charges fall within the one-year prescription period for such cases.
Under Article 90 of the Revised Penal Code, libel cases must be filed within one year from the date the complainant or authorities discover the offense.
