LTO-6 suspends license in La Paz hit-and-run probe
By Jennifer P. Rendon
ILOILO CITY — The Land Transportation Office-Region 6 has issued a show cause order against an optometrist who figured in a predawn hit-and-run incident in La Paz, Iloilo City, over the weekend.
Alias “Paolo,” 29, a resident of Barangay Buhang in Jaro district, was directed to submit a written explanation within five working days from receipt of the notice stating why no administrative or legal action should be taken against him.
LTO-6 also ordered the preventive suspension of Paolo’s driver’s license for 90 days pending an investigation by the agency’s Intelligence and Investigation Unit.
Atty. Gaudioso Geduspan II, LTO-6 regional director, also directed the respondent to immediately surrender his physical driver’s license.
The suspension is a precautionary measure pending the administrative investigation.
In his order, Geduspan cited public safety and the need to prevent similar incidents while the case remains unresolved.
The LTO-6 inquiry covers possible violations of Section 48 of Republic Act 4136 involving reckless driving and Section 55 governing a driver’s duties following an accident.
Police investigation showed the optometrist was driving a black Honda Accord along Coastal Road toward the Baldoza Street intersection at around 12:45 a.m. when the sedan struck a sari-sari store in Barangay Baldoza.
About 50 meters farther, the vehicle allegedly struck a parked tricycle.
Police said the driver then headed toward Barangay La Granja without identifying himself, rendering assistance or reporting the incident.
Police responding to a 911 call pursued the sedan and later intercepted it in Barangay Caingin.
Responding police officers alleged that the driver refused their instructions and attempted to run them over, prompting them to open fire.
The optometrist sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and underwent surgery.
Col. Wilbert Parilla, Iloilo City police chief, earlier said police filed complaints for direct assault, attempted homicide and reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property against Paolo.
LTO-6’s administrative inquiry will separately determine the driver’s liability under land transportation laws.
The show cause order also warns that failure to respond within the prescribed period will allow the agency to resolve the case based on available evidence.
