Love triangle eyed in young man’s shooting

BACOLOD CITY – Police are investigating grudges or a love triangle as possible motives behind the murder of a 21-year-old man in Barangay Balintawak, Escalante City, Negros Occidental, last Sunday.

The victim was identified as Alfredo Sumaylo II, a resident of Siquijor, who was recently assigned as a staff member of a ticketing office for a shipping firm in Escalante City.

Police Captain Lindsey Caraballe, deputy chief of Escalante City Police Station, said the victim had just disembarked from a tricycle when he was allegedly chased by an unidentified person. The suspect then shot the victim several times and fled. The victim was declared dead at a hospital.

Recovered from the scene were a deformed slug, a live round, and three spent cartridges from a .40 caliber firearm.

Caraballe said the victim was supposed to meet someone in the area. However, they could not confirm if the person he was supposed to meet was a lover or someone else.

The victim’s family had no knowledge of his activities. Caraballe stated that they could not elaborate further on the motive due to difficulties arising from the victim being from outside the province.

Authorities are reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to aid in the investigation.
