February 11 is a special non-working holiday in commemoration of the 35th death anniversary of the late Antique governor Evelio B. Javier.
Evelio B. Javier, who was born on October 14, 1942 in Hamtic, Antique, won by landslide as Antique governor in 1971 at 29 years old, becoming the country’s youngest governor.
On February 11, 1986, Javier, a staunch supporter of former President Corazon Aquino was killed by gunmen at the peak of the snap presidential elections.
His death set off an uproar to gather support and end the Marcos dictatorship.
Two weeks after his death, former President Ferdinand Marcos was finally overthrown in the historic EDSA Revolution.
Republic Act No. 7601 declares every Feb. 11 as Governor Evelio Javier Day and a special non-working holiday in the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Aklan and Iloilo.
Meanwhile, February 12, 2021 is also a non-working holiday in celebration of Lunar New Year to usher the Year of the Ox. (ERS)
