Fight fans, are you ready for another blockbuster boxing treat?
It’s finally going down. Three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko will be squaring off against former unified lightweight world champion George Kambosos Jr. on May 11, 2024.
The highly-anticipated bout will be held at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, where both decorated fighters will be vying for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight world title.
Lomachenko and Kambosos Jr. confirmed the latest development last January 31, 2024, after both boxers held a virtual press conference to announce the title fight.
After missing the chance to snatch Devin Haney’s world titles last May 2023 when he lost via a controversial unanimous decision, Lomachenko is back for redemption and is still hungry to clinch a championship belt.
Despite dominating the second half of his fight against Haney, Lomachenko and his team were stunned after all three judges gave the decision to the undefeated American slugger.
Now back to his usual routine, Lomachenko is seeking to redeem himself and take down Kambosos Jr. to complete his revenge tour.
“I’m very happy to come back. I’m very happy to be fighting there. This is the right fight because it’s a chance to be a world champion again. And I’ve never been to Australia. I’ve always wanted to go, and it’s a good opportunity. Right now, my goal is to become a world champion again. After that, I can start thinking about becoming undisputed,” said Lomachenko during the virtual press conference.
Meanwhile, Kambosos Jr. is seeking for his second straight victory after outdueling Maxi Hughes last July 2023.
However, Kambosos Jr. went on a rough patch before pulling off the win over Hughes as he suffered back-to-back defeats against Haney, all by unanimous decisions.
Facing a different beast in Lomachenko, the hardworking Kambosos Jr. is excited about the new opportunity given to him by the boxing world.
“I never step away from a challenge. I always want to fight the best. And Vasiliy Lomachenko is a guy we have looked at for a very long time. This guy is a legend. The respect we have for him is huge. So, to have this official now is extraordinary. I’m very motivated for this fight. I’m very excited, and I can’t wait,” said Kambosos Jr.
The mega fight will be promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Top Rank, Ferocious Promotions, TEG Sport and Duco Events.
