ROXAS CITY, Capiz— The “Libreng Sakay” program of the Panay Island Transport Service Cooperative (PITSC) ended on June 29, 2021.
According to PITSC chairwoman Esther Montanejos, the two-month free-ride was successful through the help of Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
The 10 units of modernized jeepneys or minibuses are now back to their usual operation.
The modernized jeepneys ferried passengers from Roxas City Integrated Transport Terminal (RITT) in Pueblo de Panay to Barangays Barra, Libas and Dumulog, and vice versa.
Last April, tricycle drivers complained of the effects the free ride program had to their livelihood.
The free ride program is a mandatory scheme under the Service Contracting Program of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
