ROXAS CITY, Capiz – The number of cases of leptospirosis in the province of Capiz has risen to 27 with 5 deaths as of April 24, 2023.
Joeffrey Espiritu, Development Management IV and acting Information Officer of the Department of Health (DOH) Capiz, said the cases are 225% more compared to 8 cases recorded from January to April 2022.
Espiritu said most of the victims were farmers who are exposed to contaminated water in rice fields.
Records showed that Roxas City has the most number of infected persons with 7.
It was followed by Dao (1), Dumalag (2), Ivisan (1), Maayon (1), Panay (3), Pilar (2), Pontevedra (5), President Roxas (2), Sapian (2), and Sigma (1).
Leptospirosis can be contracted via direct contact with infected animals or their tissues or urine or through contact with contaminated water and soil
Espiritu advised the public to seek medical consultation once symptoms persist as he urged to always keep surroundings clean.
