ROXAS CITY, Capiz — Fatalities caused by leptospirosis has reached to 12 in the province of Capiz.
Based on the case bulletin of the Provincial Health Office from January to November 15, 2025, the province has recorded 75 cases of leptospirosis.
Because of the high incident of said ailment, the provincial government of Capiz offers free medicines for the said ailment that are available in all health centers in the province.
Leptospirosis is caused by contact with the urine of infected animals, which can contaminate soil and water. Humans can become infected when bacteria from contaminated water or soil enter the body through broken skin, cuts, or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth).
Common sources of infection include contact with contaminated freshwater after heavy rainfall or floods, and recreational activities like swimming, kayaking, or rafting in contaminated areas.
As of late 2024 last year, Capiz province recorded 23 leptospirosis cases with one death between January and mid-September. This represented a decline in cases compared to the previous year.
For comparison, data from early 2025 indicates a significant increase in cases in the same period relative to 2024.
