BACOLOD City – Leptospirosis cases here went down by 23.5 percent, records from the City Health Office (CHO) indicated.
The figures covering the January to August 10, 2019 period recorded 11 cases compared to 14 in the same period last year.
The same report recorded two fatalities, lower compared to three last year.
The public is advised to avoid exposing themselves in flood waters, or otherwise wear protective clothing or boots when wading in floodwater to avoid infection, the CHO said.
Earlier, the city’s Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution calling for intensified information and education campaigns and information drive on leptospirosis.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can be contracted through the urine of infected animals, particularly rats.
One can be infected with leptospirosis when coming in contact with contaminated water or soil.
The bacteria enters the body through skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth), especially through open wounds.
