Laborer killed in Jamindan drinking session stabbing

ROXAS CITY, Capiz — A laborer died after he was hacked with a bolo by a drinking companion on Saturday night, Feb. 7, in Sitio Ulot, Barangay Ganzon, Jamindan, police said.

Police identified the victim as Roel Perez, 42, of Barangay Ganzon.

The suspect was identified as Ronilo Zonio, 51, of Barangay Pampango, Libacao, Aklan.

Barangay Ganzon Chief Bernabeth Fernandez said the two were drinking at a store owned by Allan Perez, the victim’s older brother, at about 8 p.m. when they got into a heated argument.

Fernandez said Zonio grabbed a bolo and hacked Perez in the neck.

Bystanders brought the victim for medical assistance, but he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician, police said.

Police said Zonio fled after the attack but surrendered a few hours later.

Investigators brought Zonio to the Sen. Gerry Roxas District Hospital in Dao after he sustained injuries during the scuffle, which police said happened as the two struggled for control of the bolo.

The Jamindan Municipal Police Station is investigating the incident to determine the motive.

Police said they are preparing to file a murder case against Zonio.
