A manhunt operation is underway against a village official who allegedly shot to death a farmer on March 7, 2023 in Maayon, Capiz.
Police identified the suspect as Barangay Kagawad Vergilio Descalzota, 41, of Canapian village Maayon.
The victim, Frediemor Lucas, 27, also a resident of Barangay Canapian, suffered multiple gunshot wounds on his body.
He was rushed to Bailan District Hospital in Pontevedra town but was declared dead on arrival.
Master Sergeant Guadencio Demingoy Jr., Maayon police investigator, said witnesses said there was no compelling reason for Descalzota to kill Lucas.
Prior to the incident, a birthday party was being held at the suspect’s house.
Descalzota, Lucas, and his unnamed companion were all drunk.
Demingoy said the party was over when Descalzota and the victim’s companion figured in a heated argument.
At the height of their verbal tussle, Descalzota drew a gun and fired it in the air twice. He then saw the approaching Lucas.
“Descalzota might have thought that the victim would attack him,” Demingoy said.
The suspect then repeatedly shot the victim.
Descalzota immediately fled on board his white Toyota Hilux with license plate FAF 1275. (With a report from Felipe V. Celino)
