Japan, SEAFDEC to promote sustainable aquaculture

THE Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center/Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) based in Tigbauan, Iloilo can’t thank Japan enough for continuously supporting the department’s mission to promote sustainable aquaculture.

“Thank you Dr. Koh-ichiro Mori, Japan has always been supportive of SEAFDEC’s mission especially on the financial aspect,” said SEAFDEC/AQD Chief Baliao in his opening remarks during the International Workshop On the Promotion of Sustainable Aquaculture, Aquatic Animal Health and Resource Enhancement in Southeast Asia (SARSEA).

SARSEA was held at the Richmonde Hotel in Iloilo City on June 25 to 27 2019.

Countries in SEA reported their respective country status and practices concerning sustainable aquaculture, resource enhancement and aquatic health management.

Each country’s approaches and interventions used in the process were discussed and assessed to ensure sustained production without sacrificing resource conservation principles.

“It is expected that resource persons gathered during this workshop can best describe the prevailing situation in their respective countries,” Baliao added.

Dr. Mori, SEAFDEC/AQD Deputy Chief, is the chairman of the international workshop came up with a holistic perspective of the whole aquaculture research and development spectrum.

Baliao said that through the workshop, gaps and issues will be identified where recommendations can be formulated and future research directions may be facilitated.

“I am encouraging participants to use this meeting as a platform for collaborations and partnerships to quickly find solutions to some of our pressing problems.”
