Jannik Sinner ends 2026 season with knee injury

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has ended his 2026 season as the Italian star focuses on treatment and recovery from a right knee injury that has kept him out of competition since July.
Sinner announced Tuesday that he will not play again this year, ending a dominant but injury-shortened campaign in which he compiled a 44-3 record and won six titles.
His final appearance of the season came at Wimbledon in July, where the 25-year-old defeated Alexander Zverev in four sets to claim his second consecutive men’s singles title at the grass-court Grand Slam.
Sinner also won five consecutive ATP Masters 1000 tournaments during the season at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Miami Open, Monte Carlo Masters, Madrid Open and Italian Open.
His Italian Open victory also made him only the second player to complete the career set of all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles.
The knee problem increasingly disrupted Sinner’s schedule after Wimbledon as he withdrew from tournaments week by week while attempting to recover.
Among the events he missed were the U.S. Open and two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
Sinner will also be unable to defend his championship at the season-ending ATP Tour Finals in Turin, denying the home crowd the chance to see the world No. 1 close his season in Italy.
“The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, have given me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be way different,” Sinner said in a video posted to social media.
“At the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career,” Sinner added.
