A man hacked a farmer on the afternoon of April 4 in Janiuay, Iloilo.
Police identified the suspect only as alias Dodo, a resident of Barangay Canawilian, Janiuay.
Reports said alias Raffy, 27, also a resident of Barangay Canawilian, was resting in a hammock when the suspect attacked him with a bolo.
Several people in the area stopped Dodo from further attacking the victim.
A certain Christian, who was identified as the suspect’s drinking companion, told police that Dodo got angry after several people allegedly laughed at him when he stumbled.
Christian said Raffy could not have laughed at Dodo because he was asleep, but he appeared to be an easy target because he was nearby.
The victim suffered an injury to the face during the attack.
Capt. Marlon Perez, Janiuay police chief, said Dodo fled after the incident.
Police were unable to launch a hot-pursuit operation because Barangay Canawilian is a remote village about 28 kilometers from Janiuay town proper.
Residents brought the victim to Roman Tirador Memorial District Hospital in Janiuay for treatment.
