BACOLOD CITY – Police are investigating whether the gun attack on a jail officer assigned to the Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) in Bago City on Monday was work-related or personal in nature.
Police Lt. Col. Roberto Mupas, chief of the Bago City Police Station, said the 29-year-old jail officer was unharmed, but a 57-year-old tricycle driver was injured during the incident in Barangay Tabunan, Bago City, on Monday afternoon.
Mupas said two unidentified men on a motorcycle arrived and fired at the jail officer while he was at a carwash shop.
The officer managed to seek cover inside a vehicle.
He was unable to return fire, believing at first that he was not the intended target.
The tricycle driver happened to pass by the area at the time of the shooting.
Police are determining whether the driver, a resident of Barangay Cabug in Bacolod City, was hit by a stray bullet or injured by glass fragments.
Five spent cartridges from a 9mm pistol were recovered at the scene.
Mupas said they have already identified persons of interest, and the investigation is ongoing.
