BACOLOD CITY — A 32-year-old jail officer was killed and two others were injured in a motorcycle collision in Barangay Alicante, E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental, on Friday.
Police identified the fatality as Jail Officer 1 Jonathan Maniego, a resident of Cadiz City who was assigned to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Victorias City.
Police Senior Master Sgt. Henry Mangana III, general investigator of the E.B. Magalona Municipal Police Station, said the victim and his 29-year-old back rider, identified as Ron, were on their way home after having dinner when the accident happened past 9 p.m.
Mangana said that based on the allegation of 25-year-old Matthew, a resident of Victorias City, Maniego was allegedly tailing him when the jail officer hit the rear of his motorcycle.
All were wearing helmets, but Maniego was thrown off and hit a steel barrier.
He was brought to a hospital, where he died a few minutes later, according to Mangana.
Mangana said Ron sustained minor injuries and was recuperating in a hospital but had yet to give his statement about the accident due to shock.
He said the families of both parties have initially agreed to a settlement.
