Jahns eyes breakthrough PGT win at Pueblo de Oro

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Keanu Jahns returns to the Philippine Golf Tour with a sharper game and renewed hunger as he chases an elusive victory in the closing stages of the season.
The ICTSI Pueblo de Oro Championship tees off Oct. 12 at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club, where Jahns hopes to put his length and power to good use on the open layout.
The Filipino-German also brings added confidence from his recent campaign in DP World Tour Qualifying, where he finished two strokes short of securing one of the coveted Top 13 spots.
Although Jahns fell short in the final round in Denmark, he remained in contention through the first three rounds before faltering on the last day.
The campaign also gave him a glimpse of the level required to compete on a bigger international stage.
Jahns hopes to carry that experience and the lessons from it into Pueblo de Oro as he tries to convert another strong showing into his first PGT victory of the season.
A three-time PGT winner last year, including the season-ending Match Play Championship, Jahns has come close in five starts this season but has yet to claim a title.
He has posted three Top 5 finishes, highlighted by a third-place effort at Lakewood and a fourth-place finish at Pradera Verde.
Jahns also tied for fourth in his most recent PGT appearance at Summit Point before embarking on his bid to reach the DP World Tour through a series of qualifiers.
He will face a deep field at Pueblo de Oro, where another closely contested four-day battle is expected.
The last several PGT legs have produced tight finishes, including the most recent stop in Iloilo.
Jhonnel Ababa endured a tournament-long test before displaying poise down the stretch to outmaneuver Jeffren Lumbo and end a two-year title drought on the circuit organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments Inc.
The victory gave Ababa added momentum heading into Pueblo de Oro.
A host of other contenders will also be chasing PGT glory with only three legs remaining this season, including the South Pacific and Apo tournaments in Davao later this month.
Aside from Jahns and Ababa, the field includes reigning Order of Merit winner Angelo Que, already a two-time champion this year, and Tony Lascuña, fresh from a pro-am tournament victory.
Former leg winners Rupert Zaragosa, Reymon Jaraula, Guido van der Valk and Lumbo are also expected to contend.
Negros Occidental first-time champion Art Arbole further strengthens the field.
Russell Bautista, Ryan Monsalve, Jonas Magcalayo, Jeremy Tandoy and Ivan Yabut will look to challenge the established names and add more depth to the competition.
Foreign contenders Kim Tae Soo, Chonkoo Kang and Lee Song complete a competitive field for another closely fought championship at Pueblo de Oro.
