ITSO member Capiz State University gets presidential award

The Capiz State University’s (CapSU) IP Management Office has received a prestigious honor at the 2024 Presidential Awards for Outstanding Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for its pivotal role in facilitating technology transfer and providing prototype commercialization support to MSMEs in the region.

The university’s technology business incubator called Center for Advancing Partnerships, Stimulating Upscale and Leading Enterprises (CAPSULE) specifically received the Presidential Recognition for Outstanding Development Partners, with no less than President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. conferring the award.

“The recognition of Capiz State University underscores the critical importance of intellectual property (IP) protection and strategic business development for MSMEs. In a competitive global landscape where knowledge-based assets drive economic growth, protecting intellectual property is paramount,” CapSU President Dr. Editha Alfon said.

“Through our ITSO Office, the Capiz State University does not only support local MSMEs but also contributes to the broader economic development agenda that integrates inclusiveness into the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship,” CapSU Vice-President Dr. Efren Linan said.

IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba lauded CapSU for its inclusive efforts to help MSMEs grow and contribute to the innovation and entrepreneurship fields of the country.

“CapSU’s CAPSULE Technology Business Incubator has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academia and industry, providing MSMEs with essential resources to protect their innovations and scale their operations sustainably.

By offering technology transfer services and commercialization support, CapSU empowers local entrepreneurs to navigate the complexities of IP rights and business strategy development, allowing them to leverage technology to capture opportunities,” Barba added.

In 2024, CapSU is a recipient of the Platinum Award — the highest award  — under the ITSO cluster.

The award resulted from CapSU’s breakthrough accomplishments, such as generating 50 prior art search reports, facilitating eight applications for patents and commercializing two technologies with royalty payments received.

CAPSU has also conducted 12 basic IP trainings, seven patent search trainings, three patent drafting trainings and four technology commercialization and technology promotion trainings.

President Marcos commended Capiz State University and other recipients for their significant contributions. The awards ceremony, held to celebrate the exceptional growth, competitiveness, innovation and sustainability of MSMEs, is a flagship initiative spearheaded by DTI’s MSME Development Group. (IPOPHL)
