Iga Swiatek pulled off another clinical display of tennis after sweeping Naomi Osaka, 6-2, 6-1, to punch a quarterfinal ticket in the ongoing Italian Open tournament on May 12, 2026, at the BNP Paribas Arena in Rome.
With the victory, Swiatek extended her perfect streak of not dropping a single set to back-to-back matches and is aiming to sustain her momentum today, when she squares off against Jessica Pegula.
Swiatek made sure no sloppy start would dim her Italian Open campaign after kicking off the round-of-16 matchup with a lopsided beating of Osaka.
Unlike in her opening match against American challenger Caty McNally, where she had to dig deep to seal the win in three grueling sets, Swiatek quickly grabbed a double-break lead against Osaka.
A barrage of forehand down-the-line winners began Swiatek’s third-round rampage, backstopped by a series of service aces that steered her to a comfortable 4-1 lead.
After a service hold by Osaka, Swiatek officially closed the first-set pathway with a break and a dominant 40-15 hold to move 1-0 ahead.
Swiatek smelled blood in the second and final set and didn’t give the struggling Osaka any room to breathe as she pummeled her way inside no-man’s land with a dominant net game.
Too innovative with her offensive approach after salvaging points that could’ve gone the other way, Swiatek brought the crowd to its feet with her insane shot-making, particularly in the fourth game of the set when Osaka threatened to score a break point.
From being down 30-40, Swiatek sent the early exclamation point with a 3-0 run to grab the set, en route to a one-sided 6-1 win to formalize her qualification for the quarterfinal stage.
Swiatek wrapped up her third consecutive win with 67 total points won, including 36 on the return, six break points, and three service aces.
“From the beginning till the end I knew what to do,” Swiatek said after the win.
“I did great. I was pretty confident with my game. It all kind of clicks together, I would say, both physical, mental, and technical part on the practices. It’s nice.”
