Isaiah Thomas is back with the Boston Celtics, but not as an official member of the playing roster.
After spending three illustrious NBA seasons with the Celtics, the point guard is set to rejoin Boston in the front office and has been designated as the team’s new pro and college scout, as announced on May 15, 2026.
According to multiple reports, Thomas will be based in the Seattle area and will work on scouting duties on the West Coast.
The recent hiring marked the end of the long-standing tension between the two camps, following Boston management’s trade of Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of the Kyrie Irving package in 2017.
After filling Boston’s superstar role from 2015 to 2017, Thomas admitted that he was deeply hurt by the trade, lacking prior knowledge that a deal was already in place.
The trade began his downward spiral in the NBA, as Thomas bounced around Cleveland, the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver, Washington, New Orleans, Dallas, Charlotte, and Phoenix.
His final NBA stint took place during the 2023-24 season, when he received a 10-day contract with the Suns, which lasted for just six regular-season games.
In retrospect, Thomas became Boston’s franchise cornerstone for three years and had his most memorable games wearing the green and white threads.
Thomas recorded his two most dominant scoring performances in the NBA while playing for Boston, dropping 52 points against Miami in 2016 and a historic 53-point playoff masterpiece in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Wizards.
Tagged as the NBA’s “King of the Fourth” after taking over games for Boston in the clutch, Thomas ended his three-year run averaging 23 points and six assists per contest.
Now that all is well between Thomas and the Celtics, the 12-year NBA veteran is looking to shift his focus from scoring to helping the franchise recruit more unique talents heading into the 2026-27 season.
