Ilonggos can now explore their ancestry more easily after the Iloilo Provincial Library formalized its partnership with FamilySearch, opening wider access to digitized genealogical records.
Launched on April 6, the collaboration designates the provincial library as a FamilySearch affiliate, enabling users to access a broader collection of historical documents such as census data, baptismal records, and birth and marriage certificates.
Many of these records are available only through partner institutions.
The Iloilo Provincial Library is the second public library in the Philippines to receive the designation.
The launch, held at the Grand Social Hall of Casa Real de Iloilo, highlighted the growing importance of preserving family heritage and making historical records more accessible to the public.
“The affiliation positions the Iloilo Provincial Library and Archives as a key center for genealogical research and historical documentation in the province, benefiting researchers, students, and families seeking to trace their roots,” said Provincial Information Officer Nereo Lujan.
Provincial Librarian Allana Delgado said the initiative responds to increasing demand for genealogical information, particularly for citizenship applications, retrieval of birth records, and documentation of family lineage.
FamilySearch Field Relations Specialist Felvir Ordinario demonstrated how users can begin building their family trees using the platform.
Users may create a free account on FamilySearch or download its mobile app to begin exploring available records.
For full access, the public is encouraged to visit the Iloilo Provincial Library, where dedicated computers are available for use.
The library is located at Casa Real de Iloilo (Old Provincial Capitol) and is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
