The Grand Ballroom of Okada Manila does not need much to feel ceremonial, but on the night of the Asia Leaders Awards 2026, it earned the room it occupied. Ambassadors from the International Diplomatic Corps, Philippine government officials, and business figures from across the region crossed the foyer in clothing that doubled as biography. National attire did most of the talking. A terno held its own against a hanbok; a sari met a barong without ceremony. The hall, before the program even began, was its own argument for what the evening was about.
Among the honorees was an Ilongga.
Sheilla Golez-Tiongco was conferred the 2026 Asia Leaders Award for her work in business and philanthropy — twin pursuits she has long treated as inseparable. The recognition placed her within a roster of regional figures the awards body has come to single out for impact beyond commerce alone.
“I am deeply humbled and honored to be counted among these outstanding leaders as a woman for successful entrepreneurship and pure philanthropy,” Golez-Tiongco said upon receiving the trophy. She was accompanied by her husband, Dr. Napoleon Tiongco Jr., whose own business standing in Iloilo is well established and whose presence at her side felt less like escort than co-author.
The Asia Leaders Awards spans categories that resist easy summary — Leadership Excellence, Excellence in Business and Organizations, Creative Brilliance, among others — a structure that allows the body to acknowledge a regional truth: leadership in Asia rarely fits a single template. The night honored corporate titans and quiet builders in the same breath. San Miguel Corporation Chairman Ramon Ang was recognized at the Asia’s Influential Leader Awards 2026, while Kevin Tan, President and CEO of Alliance Global Group, Inc., received the citation for Asia’s Outstanding Business Leader in Strategic Growth and Enterprise Excellence.
The awards body itself was represented by an executive board whose names carry weight in their own right: Dr. Sergio Ortiz Jr., Consul Enunia Mangio (represented by Mr. Dong Benedicto), Director General Tereso Panga, Dr. Rommel P. Ybañez, Congresswoman Marissa Magsino, Architect Felino “Jun” Palafox, and Undersecretary Vidal D. Villanueva.
For Iloilo, the evening was less about the chandelier than the chair beneath it. Golez-Tiongco’s philanthropy has unfolded quietly in the city for years, the kind of work that does not always announce itself. That a regional jury found it anyway is the part of the story that will last longer than the gown.
