ILOMOCA Champions Cultural Exchange with ‘Haiku, Hana, Kimono’

The Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) is opening its doors to a journey of creative discovery with “Haiku, Hana, Kimono: An Afternoon of Japanese Culture and Friendship” on September 8, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Organized alongside the SSEAYP International Philippines–Western Visayas Chapter (SIP-WV), the special gathering joins the nationwide commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and the Philippines, reaffirming ILOMOCA’s role as a vibrant home for art, education, and international dialogue.

Invited students from SIP-WV partner schools will be welcomed into the spaces of ILOMOCA for an immersive cultural experience designed to broaden their worldviews and nurture artistic appreciation. Through hands-on workshops, dialogue, and reflection, this initiative highlights ILOMOCA’s commitment to cultural exchange—giving young Filipinos direct access to Japan’s rich artistic heritage while strengthening lasting bonds of friendship and mutual understanding.

The program will offer participants a multifaceted experience across three classic Japanese art forms:

Haiku (Poetry)

A short lecture, writing workshop, and reading session on the art of Japanese poetry, led by Prof. Alfredo Diaz, a 1992 SSEAYP Participating Youth and 2015 National Leader.

Hana (Ikebana)

A lecture-demonstration and interactive workshop on traditional flower arrangement guided by Dr. Emilia T. Quinitio of the Philippine Association of Japanese Government Scholars (PHILAJAMES) Visayas Chapter.

Kimono (Attire)

A demonstration and wearing experience featuring traditional Japanese garments, including the kimono, yukata, hakama, and haori, generously provided by Ms. Yukie Kobayashi Loot.

The event advances the mission of the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP), a youth exchange initiative that fosters leadership, peace, and intercultural understanding across Japan and ASEAN. In the Philippines, this mission is carried forward by SSEAYP International Philippines (SIP), led by President Dr. Jett Lu. Its newly formed Western Visayas Chapter connects generations of alumni while bringing global perspectives closer to regional communities.

By hosting “Haiku, Hana, Kimono,” ILOMOCA extends this mission into the museum space, underscoring the essential role of museums not merely as repositories of art, but as living spaces for community engagement, cross-cultural learning, and international friendship.
