Iloilo woman, 22, arrested over DIY braces service

ILOILO CITY — Police arrested a 22-year-old woman accused of offering unlicensed dental services online.
The suspect, identified by police only as “Maymay,” was arrested on the afternoon of Aug. 12 at her home in Iloilo City’s Jaro district.
Police said the house also served as her alleged clinic.
Police Col. Richard Adonis Habawel, Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 6 director, said the suspect advertised do-it-yourself braces installation for as little as PHP 3,000.
She also allegedly offered braces removal for PHP 1,500.
Habawel said the Philippine Dental Association filed a complaint against the suspect, noting that she had no license or professional background in dentistry.
“According to her, she only learned how to do it through tutorials she saw online,” he added.
The suspect was detained and charged with violating Republic Act No. 9484, or the Philippine Dental Act of 2007, in relation to Republic Act No. 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Under the Philippine Dental Act, practicing dentistry without a certificate of registration, professional identification card or special permit is punishable by a fine ranging from PHP 200,000 to PHP 500,000, imprisonment from two years and one day to five years, or both.
The Cybercrime Prevention Act covers offenses under special laws committed through information and communications technology and provides for a penalty one degree higher upon conviction.
