A group of weavers and community members from Iloilo joined a two-day training workshop to learn how to turn handwoven textiles into finished clothing pieces.
Held June 23-24 at the Baraclayan Community Center in Miagao town, the workshop was organized by the Department of Trade and Industry Iloilo in partnership with the Barangay LGU of Baraclayan.
Twelve participants from the Baraclayan Weavers Association, Salngan Livelihood Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Indag-an Primary Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and Looms of Life took part in the event.
Fashion design professor Gloria Fe Golveo of Iloilo Science and Technology University led the sessions.
Participants learned the basics of body measurement, pattern drafting and cutting, fabric matching, and sewing.
Each team created a blouse and skirt set as their final output, combining plain fabric with checkered patterns for accents such as collars and sleeves.
The training introduced techniques for working with handwoven fabric, which requires special handling due to its tendency to shrink and patterned weave.
Industrial sewing machines and edging equipment—provided by DTI Iloilo through its Shared Service Facilities program—were used during the workshop.
