The Iloilo provincial government has partnered with a volunteer surgical team from Houston, Texas, to provide free total knee replacement surgeries to qualified patients at Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC).
The partnership was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed July 14 by the provincial government, WVMC, Lions International, and the Houston-based medical mission led by Dr. Michael George.
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in providing free orthopedic surgical services to qualified patients.
The visiting team is performing total knee replacement surgeries on 18 beneficiaries at WVMC, including 15 residents of Iloilo province.
According to the provincial government, the procedures are expected to restore mobility and improve the quality of life of patients with severe knee disorders.
Total knee replacement is generally considered for patients with severe knee pain or stiffness that limits daily activities and involves replacing damaged joint surfaces with artificial components.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. welcomed the visiting surgeons and medical mission volunteers during a dinner hosted by the provincial government in recognition of their humanitarian service.
Provincial Administrator Dr. Raul Banias represented the governor during the signing of the agreement.
Banias was joined by Board Members Dr. Darl Tupas and Dominique Oso and Dr. Don Garcia of the Provincial Health Management Office.
The medical mission is being facilitated by Lions International through Domingo Oso Jr., Dr. Sonia Gallon, and Myrna Bernal in partnership with WVMC and the provincial government.
