The Iloilo Provincial Health Office (PHO) has reported its first case of leptospirosis in 2025, with the patient hailing from the town of Maasin.
PHO Health Service Delivery Division Head Dr. Rodney Labis said the case was confirmed between January 1 and 4.
In 2024, the province recorded 208 cases, resulting in six deaths.
Dr. Labis highlighted that approximately three percent, or three out of every 100 leptospirosis cases, result in fatalities.
He called on farmers and other at-risk individuals to take precautionary measures, particularly when working in contaminated environments such as flooded fields, streams, or ditches. He advised wearing protective gear such as gloves and boots to avoid contact. Any open wounds or insect bites should be immediately washed with clean water.
Additionally, he emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention as soon as possible. He recommended that individuals exposed to promptly visit rural health units or hospitals to receive prophylactic treatment, which can help prevent the onset of the disease.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection typically contracted through direct contact with the urine of infected animals. The bacteria can enter the body through open wounds, abrasions, or mucous membranes, including the mouth, nose, or eyes.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the infection can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, headache, chills, muscle pain, and jaundice. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications such as kidney failure, meningitis, liver damage, or even death.
