The Iloilo provincial government distributed holiday gift packs to around 2,000 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Iloilo District Jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, during a Christmas outreach activity on Dec. 20.
The activity was led by Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. as part of the provincial government’s annual holiday program for PDLs. Each recipient received a gift pack worth PHP 350 containing food items and basic necessities.
The gift-giving was conducted in coordination with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the Iloilo Provincial Employees and Community Multi-purpose Cooperative (IPECMPC).
Also present were BJMP Region VI Director Senior Superintendent Jhon Montero, Iloilo District Jail Administrator Atty. Jairus Anthony Dogelio, and Jail Warden Chief Inspector Mark Malhabour.
The gift-giving activity is a yearly initiative of the provincial government, continuing a tradition started by former Iloilo governor Arthur Defensor Sr. as part of its outreach programs for persons deprived of liberty.
On the sidelines of the event, the governor also led the groundbreaking ceremony for a PHP 8 million multi-purpose gym at the Iloilo District Jail Male Dormitory.
Funded by the Iloilo provincial government, the facility is intended to support the holistic rehabilitation of PDLs through physical wellness activities, sports events, and other recreational programs.
Provincial Engineer Romeo Andig and BJMP officials attended the ceremony.
As a token of appreciation, BJMP officials presented provincial officials with a handcrafted diorama made by the PDLs.
The provincial government said it will continue supporting programs and projects aimed at improving jail facilities and strengthening rehabilitation initiatives, including efforts to equip PDLs with skills that will help prepare them for eventual reintegration into society.
