Iloilo province steps up pet sterilization efforts

The Provincial Veterinarian Office (PVO) of Iloilo is intensifying its campaign for spaying and neutering pets to manage the stray animal population in the province effectively.

In a recent drive, the town of Miagao saw 25 animals spayed, in addition to 29 others receiving vaccinations and complimentary surgical procedures.

Dr. Darel Tabuada, the Provincial Veterinarian, stated that these actions are pivotal in substantially decreasing the number of stray cats and dogs in public spaces and plazas.

He announced that, as of April 2, the province has successfully vaccinated 2,184 dogs this year alone.

The PVO’s ongoing operations support the provincial government’s ambition to achieve a ‘rabies-free’ status by 2030. These free neutering services are being conducted in collaboration with Municipal Agriculture Offices across various towns.

Spaying and neutering, essential in preventing animal reproduction, are recognized as key measures for addressing the stray animal situation not just in Iloilo, but nationwide.

This campaign also aims to mitigate public health risks and encourage responsible pet ownership.
