Police presence during the city government’s clearing operations against ambulant vendors, or bolanteros, is meant to maintain peace and order, the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) said.
The ICPO issued the statement following social media posts alleging that police were deployed to threaten street vendors during clearing operations at the Iloilo Terminal Market on the evening of April 10.
Col. Wilbert Parilla, Iloilo City police chief, said police personnel were deployed solely to promote peace, order, and public safety, and to provide security assistance to the city government in the lawful implementation of clearing operations.
He said the operations were conducted in accordance with existing local ordinances and are intended to maintain order in public spaces, ensure the unhampered movement of pedestrians and vehicles, and protect the general welfare of the community.
“The role of the police was limited to maintaining order and preventing any untoward incidents,” Parilla said.
While the ICPO recognized concerns raised by certain groups, Parilla said no excessive force was used and that police personnel exercised maximum tolerance and restraint throughout the activity.
“We appeal to everyone to remain calm, responsible, and respectful in addressing this matter. The police are here not to oppress, but to protect and maintain peace and order for the greater good,” he said.
Parilla urged all concerned parties to respect lawful authority and follow existing regulations.
“Let us resolve issues through proper dialogue and legal means, anchored on mutual respect and understanding,” he said.
He assured that the ICPO remains neutral, professional, and committed to upholding the rule of law while respecting the rights and welfare of all sectors.
