The League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Iloilo Chapter expressed concern over Rep. Bong Suntay’s remarks during a House committee hearing, urging public officials to uphold the dignity of women and maintain respectful conduct in office.
The controversy arose after Suntay, in an attempt to argue that “imagination” cannot be criminalized, referenced actress Anne Curtis during a discussion on impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte, saying he felt a strong “desire” upon seeing her and that he had merely imagined “what could happen.”
The remark drew immediate criticism from lawmakers and the public.
In a March 7 statement, LMP Iloilo called the comments “inappropriate” and inconsistent with the integrity expected of public servants, emphasizing that remarks that “demean, objectify, or diminish the dignity of women run contrary to the principles of gender equality and respectful public discourse.”
The statement noted that the timing of the remarks, coinciding with National Women’s Month, made them especially concerning, as the period highlights women’s contributions and reaffirms the nation’s commitment to their rights, safety and empowerment.
LMP Iloilo emphasized that municipalities in the province have long supported programs and policies promoting gender equality, protecting women from harassment and discrimination, and fostering safe, respectful communities.
These initiatives, the league said, reflect a shared belief that leadership must be anchored in responsibility, integrity and respect for all individuals.
“Accountability is an essential pillar of public service, and it is through humility and responsibility that trust in public institutions is strengthened,” the statement read.
The league concluded by reaffirming its commitment to promote equality, protect the dignity of women and ensure that public leadership continues to reflect the values of respect, decency and accountability expected by the people of Iloilo.
