Iloilo hospital breaks ground on mother-child facility

ILOILO CITY — The Iloilo Provincial Hospital (IPH) in Pototan broke ground Monday, Aug. 24, for its first dedicated Mother and Child Building, a PHP 143.8-million facility that will expand maternal and pediatric health care services in the province.
The two-story building, expected to be completed within 365 days, will accommodate up to 90 patients.
It will include an emergency room, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatric departments, delivery suites, operating rooms, recovery and inpatient areas, and a neonatal intensive care unit for premature and critically ill newborns.
Third District Rep. Lorenz Defensor said the facility is expected to improve access to specialized care and strengthen IPH’s role as a major government referral hospital serving Pototan and neighboring communities in central and northern Iloilo.
IPH is the only Level II hospital operated by the Iloilo provincial government and serves as a key referral center for patients across the province.
Defensor also committed an additional PHP 100 million for the project, targeted for release next year, to fund further improvements to the building, equipment, facilities, and medical services.
He said the additional funding would be incorporated into a revised program of work to be submitted to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), allowing the planned improvements to be considered as construction progresses.
“We will make this hospital the standard of healthcare for mothers and children for years to come,” Defensor said.
He also said he plans to coordinate with West Visayas State University (WVSU), particularly on programs related to pediatrics, to help augment personnel for the facility.
IPH chief Dr. Albert Cordero described the project as a major milestone and an important support for Ilonggos, particularly those needing maternal and child health care services.
Vice Gov. Nathalie Ann Debuque, League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Iloilo chapter President Suzette Mamon, Pototan Mayor Rafael Enrique, and other provincial officials attended the groundbreaking.
Also present was Engr. Richard Hernandez, officer in charge of the Department of Public Works and Highways Iloilo 6th District Engineering Office.
