Two former Philippine Army battalion commanders were recognized for their anti-insurgency efforts in Iloilo province.
The Iloilo Provincial Government, through the Provincial Peace and Order Council, honored Lt. Col. Vicel Jan Garsuta, former commander of the 12th Infantry Battalion, and Col. Arturo S. Balgos Jr., former commander of the 61st Infantry Battalion, for their leadership and service.
The PPOC resolutions were formally turned over during the flag ceremony on Monday, April 6, at the opening of the 125th Semana sang Iloilo.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. and Vice Gov. Lee Ann Debuque, together with members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, led the awarding of the resolutions to Garsuta and Balgos.
PPOC Resolution No. 2025-14 was conferred on Garsuta “in recognition of his outstanding leadership, which led to the successful dismantling of the Central Front, Komiteng Rehiyon–Panay of the CPP-NPA-NDF.”
PPOC Resolution No. 2025-16 was awarded to Balgos for his significant accomplishments, including the dismantling of the KR-P’s Southern Front.
The recognition underscored the provincial government’s appreciation for the officers’ contributions to peace, security and stability in Iloilo, which officials said helped pave the way for the province’s declaration as having a stable internal peace and security situation.
Semana sang Iloilo commemorates the establishment of the civil government in Iloilo Province on April 11, 1901, with this year’s observance marking its 125th edition.
