Iloilo eyes mega sports, events hub in Western Visayas

Iloilo officials are pushing plans for a large-scale sports, events, and cultural complex envisioned to strengthen the province’s position as a regional destination for tourism and investment.

The proposed development, which includes a Regional Sports Facilities and Events Center and a Regional Cultural Center, is being eyed as a future venue for major sporting competitions, conventions, concerts, exhibitions, and cultural activities in Western Visayas.

In a press release, Uswag Ilonggo Party-list Rep. Jojo Ang said efforts are ongoing to identify the most suitable site for the project, with areas along the Iloilo Sunset Boulevard and the Iloilo Circumferential Road among the locations being considered.

The project is planned to accommodate around 15,000 to 20,000 attendees, allowing Iloilo to host larger regional and national events.

Ang also disclosed that an initial P1-billion funding commitment had been secured for the proposal, although the release remains subject to the finalization of the project site and other requirements.

Discussions are also underway on the possible donation of land for the development to help reduce government spending on property acquisition.

The proposed complex is expected to generate economic opportunities by drawing visitors, businesses, and investments to the province while also creating jobs during construction and operations.

The proposal likewise highlights the promotion of Ilonggo culture through the planned Regional Cultural Center.

According to Ang, talks are being explored with Mañosa and Company Inc. for the possible design of the cultural facility.

The firm was founded by National Artist for Architecture Francisco Mañosa, known for advocating Filipino-inspired architecture.

The cultural center is envisioned to become a venue that would showcase the heritage, artistry, and creative identity of Western Visayas and the Ilonggo community. (iStockPhoto)
