Iloilo City eyes to save P96,000 monthly from solar power

Going green and hopeful to save big, the Iloilo City government implemented a solar power program covering at least a third of its daily energy demand of around 200 kilowatts.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the move is expected to reduce the city’s electricity expenses and save around P96,000 monthly in addition to potential benefits from the net metering program.

“Maayo naman nga may solar na kita… ma-lessen ang half-day early out, at the same time, ma-lessen ang gasto ta, kay Sabado kag Domingo wala kita opisina. And because of the net metering program, ibaligya ta sa grid ang aton kuryente,” Treñas said.

Treñas said they plan to apply for the program with MORE Electric and Power Corp (MORE Power) to manage excess supply, particularly on weekends.

“Dako nga savings para sa syudad,” he added.

The city has completed the installation of 134 solar panels over the weekend, and these are set to begin operations this week.

The mayor revealed plans to extend the use of solar power to the legislative building and introduce it to more public schools after the success of the current project.

Engineer James Macairang of the City Engineer’s Office emphasized that the solar power initiative would not only contribute to reduced consumption but also support green projects in the city.

Presently, the city government’s two dialysis centers, Esplanades 1 and 2, and the city’s largest national high school are already utilizing solar energy,
