Iloilo marked a milestone in renewable energy development as the 62-megawatt peak Ajuy-1 Solar Power Project officially broke ground in Barangay Tipacla, Ajuy, on Panay Island.
The PHP 2.37-billion facility, developed by Jin Navitas Solaris, is the province’s first major ground-mounted solar plant and will supply clean electricity to the Panay grid via the Sara–Panit 69-kilovolt transmission line.
Spanning 47.86 hectares, the project was awarded under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program 2 (GEA-2) and will operate at a green energy tariff of PHP 4.35 per kilowatt-hour.
“This groundbreaking initiative not only marks a significant step in reducing our carbon footprint but also empowers local communities by providing them with reliable and renewable energy resources,” said Department of Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin, who led the ceremony.
The Ajuy-1 project aligns with the Iloilo Provincial Renewable Energy Plan (I-PREP), which aims to expand renewable energy adoption, enhance energy self-sufficiency, and foster public-private partnerships.
The plant also supports the implementation of the Iloilo Provincial Ordinance for Renewable Energy (I-PORE), a landmark legislation that incentivizes clean energy investments and integrates renewables into local development strategies.
By injecting solar power into the Panay grid, the facility is expected to stabilize electricity supply in Northern Iloilo and contribute to lowering electricity costs for residents and businesses.
The project also brings socioeconomic benefits, including increased local government revenues, job creation, and skills development in clean energy technologies for nearby communities.
Ajuy-1 supports the national target of sourcing 35 percent of the country’s energy from renewable sources by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040, as outlined in the Philippine Energy Plan.
System Impact Studies required for the project have been completed, ensuring its integration with the local grid infrastructure and paving the way for construction and commissioning.
Jin Navitas Solaris is expected to complete the solar plant within the next 18 to 24 months, depending on site development and transmission line interconnection.
The company said it will work closely with local government units and host communities to ensure that environmental safeguards and inclusive development plans are in place throughout the project’s life cycle.
