Iga Swiatek’s quest for her first Grand Slam title on the grass surface is still alive after blanking Danish ace Clara Tauson- 6.4, 6.1- during their Round of 16 matchup in the ongoing Wimbledon tournament on July 8, 2025, in London.
The current world No. 8 WTA player replicated her third-round performance against Danielle Collins, where she also scored a lopsided sweep- 6.2, 6.3.
It was all Swiatek from the get-go as her baseline forehand winners steered her to an early momentum in the first five game sets of the opener.
However, Tauson gained her footing after countering back with a break point and was in a position to level the match at 5-all, but Swiatek had other plans and broke her serving rhythm with a break back to take the lead.
It was an odd ending in the first set as both players failed to hold their service possessions, but fortunately for Swiatek, Tauson folded under the pressure and committed costly unforced errors in the most crucial stretch of the first frame.
With a chance to break back after holding a brief 30-15 lead, Tauson faltered with a short drop shot that bounced at the top of the net, and committed another unnecessary error after sending a wide backhand.
The shaky sequence in a span of 26 seconds allowed Swiatek to break free in the second set, sending a demoralizing exclamation point featuring a barrage of down-the-line winners and weird angled backhand points.
From a tightly-contested first set, Swiatek widened her gap in the second and limited Tauson’s offensive options with her much-improved defensive game in the net area.
Swiatek also capped off the win with a huge serving game, scoring four service aces derived from a 92% winning percentage on her first service possessions.
Awaiting Swiatek in the quarterfinals is Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, who is currently having one of her dream starts in any Grand Slam setting.
Before arranging the highly anticipated duel with Swiatek, the Russian stalwart took down Jessica Maneiro, Daria Kasatkina, Yuliia Starodubtseva, and Maya Joint.
