ROXAS CITY, Capiz — Net metering is no longer advisable for consumers using hybrid solar systems, according to a solar power expert.
Engr. Richard Francisco of Solar Power Engineering Services said hybrid solar systems have their own batteries intended for solar energy that can be used even at night.
Because of this, he said, excess power produced by the system no longer passes through the line of Capiz Electric Cooperative, or Capelco.
In an interview with the media Wednesday, May 27, Francisco said net metering is used only for on-grid solar systems because the process connects the solar setup to the power utility, allowing consumers to reduce their electricity payments through excess energy produced.
Consumers using hybrid solar systems can use stored power even when the electric provider fails to supply electricity, he said.
Francisco reminded the public that it is still better to consult a licensed solar installer before using a solar system to ensure safety and the proper setup of appliances.
About 229 household consumers in Capiz use solar power as a source of electricity.
Engr. Edgar Diaz, acting general manager of Capiz Electric Cooperative, disclosed the figure to local media recently.
He said the number was based on data gathered during inspections conducted by Capelco among its member-consumers.
“It shows that several individuals have been supporting renewable energy,” he said.
Diaz said using solar power is not prohibited, but he reminded consumers to inform Capelco management so the cooperative can check their connection systems for safety.
He recommended that household owners using solar panels apply for net metering so they can benefit from billing offsets and recover part of the expenses incurred during installation.
Net metering allows qualified consumers with renewable energy systems to export excess power to the distribution grid and receive credits on their electricity bills.
Diaz said proper inspection could also help ensure the exact distribution of electricity in a house or building to avoid overloading or overheating.
Solar power from the sun is an alternative solution amid rising electricity costs.
