Hurkacz sends Djokovic packing at Shanghai Masters
By Leobert Julian A. de la Peña

SHANGHAI — Novak Djokovic made an early exit from the Shanghai Masters after falling to Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.
Three days after winning the China Open title, the 24-time Grand Slam champion failed to sustain his momentum as Hurkacz eliminated him, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 64 on Oct. 9 at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.
The Polish standout overwhelmed Djokovic with his serve, finishing with 13 aces and winning 82% of his first-serve points.
Hurkacz set the tone early with a powerful service performance, mixing flat and kick serves to keep Djokovic from settling into his return game.
Djokovic responded with his trademark returns and earned an opportunity to pressure Hurkacz in the third game.
Hurkacz recovered from a 15-30 deficit by winning the next three points to hold serve.
The turning point came late in the opening set when Hurkacz secured a crucial break to move ahead 5-4.
Hurkacz then produced another commanding service game, surrendering only one point as he closed out the first set.
Djokovic adjusted his approach on Hurkacz’s serve in the second set, briefly switching from a topspin forehand return to a flatter stroke in an attempt to take the ball earlier.
Hurkacz’s power, however, forced Djokovic back to his more familiar topspin returns.
Djokovic tried several tactical adjustments, but Hurkacz’s consistency on serve and from the baseline continued to dictate the match.
Hurkacz struck early in the second set with another break to seize control before maintaining his advantage with strong service games.
The Polish player eventually closed out the 6-3 set to complete the straight-sets victory and end Djokovic’s Shanghai campaign.
“Beijing was great, and a very early exit here, but it is ok,” Djokovic said.
“It is very difficult to return his serve, almost impossible. So yeah, I did not adjust and it was a really tough draw for me playing him in the first match.”
